Spain reports 59 coronavirus deaths overnight, lowest in two months

5/18/2020

Spain’s overnight death toll from the coronavirus was 59 on Monday, the lowest figure in two months, the government said.

The cumulative death toll rose to 27,709, while the number of confirmed cases rose to 231,606 on Monday from 231,350 the previous day, according to health ministry figures.

Figures include data for more than 24 hours as the ministry changed its methods on Monday. It was the second day in a row that deaths were under 100.

Spain’s daily deaths fall below 100 for first time in two months

5/17/2020

Spain recorded its lowest death toll in two months with 87 deaths in 24 hours.

It was the first time that Spain announced under 100 deaths in a day which could be due to a delay in reporting over the weekend, the health emergency coordinator said.

"This is good news – even if it is always hard to speak about deaths from this disease," said Fernando Simon, Spain's head of health emergency coordination.

Spain reports lowest daily deaths from Covid-19 since mid-March

5/16/2020

Spanish health authorities reported the lowest daily increase in coronavirus deaths since mid-March on Saturday, as the number of new cases continues to slow down.

"While it is painful that people continue to die from coronavirus, the numbers are favorable," Dr. Fernando Simon, Spain's Director for Health Emergencies, said of the number of new deaths at the daily coronavirus briefing.

The number of coronavirus cases rose to 230,698, an increase of 539 in the past 24 hours. It showed an increase of 0.2% on the previous day, continuing the deceleration trend seen in the past few weeks.

"Until now, we haven't currently detected an active outbreak in any of the regions," Simon said of the infections, while cautioning that Spaniards need to remain vigilant.

Spain to relax restrictions on Monday, reports lowest daily death rate since March

5/10/2020

Roughly half of Spain’s 47 million inhabitants will be able to enjoy their first drink or meal at an outdoor terrace on Monday, although residents of Madrid and Barcelona have to wait.

The two major cities have been hardest hit by the virus outbreak. Other areas, however, will be allowed to further loosen restrictions that have been in place for nearly two months. Officials are under pressure to revive a flagging economy amid rocketing unemployment.

Bar and restaurant owners in cities like Seville and Bilbao will be able to open 50 percent of their outdoor seating for customers, while residents there will be allowed meet in groups of up to 10 people, and go to church, theaters and museums in limited numbers. Small shops will be able to open without the requirement for an appointment.

Half of Spaniards will see lockdown eased from Monday as death toll falls

5/9/2020

Spain’s daily death toll from the coronavirus fell to its second lowest since mid-March on Saturday, as half the country prepared to move to the next phase of an exit from one of Europe’s strictest lockdowns.

Spain began to loosen its lockdown this week, but Phase 1 will include a considerable easing of measures that will allow people to move around their province as well as attend concerts and go to the theatre. Gatherings of up to 10 people will be allowed.

“We’ve managed to retake 99% of the ground lost to the virus,” said Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in a televised address on Saturday. But he warned people moving to Phase 1 to be “prudent” and “cautious”.

In regions that made the cut, such as the Canary and Balearic Islands, bars, restaurants and shops will open at reduced capacity, and museums, gyms and hotels will open their doors for the first time in nearly two months.

Spain Virus Death Toll Declines as Lockdown Easing Moves Ahead

5/7/2020

Spain recorded a drop in the nation’s daily coronavirus death toll and a small increase in the number of new cases, as the government moves ahead with a gradual easing of the nation’s eight-week lockdown.

The number of fatalities rose by 213 to 26,070 in the 24 hours through Thursday, compared with an increase of 244 on Wednesday, according to Health Ministry data. Infections rose by 754 to 221,447 after the previous day’s gain of 685. The total number of cases was adjusted to reflect changes in data for the Madrid region.

Spain’s parliament on Wednesday authorized the government to extend a state of emergency for two weeks through May 23, even after a steady drop in the number of infections and new cases over the past month.

The government is pursuing a cautious easing of confinement rules to avoid a resurgence in infections. Spain has the second-most extensive outbreak in the world, behind the U.S. and ahead of Italy, the original epicenter of the virus in Europe.

Loved ones reunite as some of Europe's hardest-hit countries ease lockdowns

5/5/2020

Loved ones have reunited and some cafes and bars are back in business as some of Europe’s hardest-hit coronavirus countries ease lockdown restrictions.

Italy and Spain - which have been hotspots for the virus - relaxed measures after recording their lowest daily number of deaths for weeks, although both nations reported an increase in fatalities on Monday.

Italy, which has the world's second-highest number of COVID-19 deaths, has embarked on a slow return to some kind of normality despite fears of a resurgence of the infection.

Under the new rules, relatives can be reunited with their families, construction work can resume and factories are able to revive their long-stalled production.

France, Italy and Spain have registered the lowest daily death tolls for weeks as they prepare to ease restrictions

5/3/2020

France, Italy and Spain have registered the lowest daily death tolls for weeks as they prepare to ease restrictions.

France reported 135 deaths; Spain's 164 were the lowest since mid-March; and Italy's 174 was a two-month low.

Meanwhile French doctor has claimed new tests on samples from patients show the virus was present in the country last year - weeks before the first officially recorded case.

The number of new recorded deaths is the lowest since late March, when only deaths in hospitals were being recorded. The new figures include deaths in care homes and have been declining for several days.

Meanwhile an intensive care chief in the Paris region has told local media that the virus was present in France on 27 December - a month before the first cases were confirmed.

Surfing and strolling, Spaniards reclaim the outdoors

5/3/2020

Spaniards revelled in a second day of freedom on Sunday, heading outside in time-slots for age groups on the first weekend adults were allowed out since one of the world’s strictest coronavirus lockdowns was imposed in mid-March.

Though Spain’s appalling COVID-19 outbreak has shrouded the nation in mourning for more than 25,000 dead, there was much-needed relief on a sunny spring day as people at last headed back to the streets, hills and sea.

Surfer Sigrid Cervera, 44, yelled for joy as she jumped into the waves with her board in Gava, a town on the Mediterranean coast outside Barcelona. “I have not been able to go surfing for ages so I am very excited,” she said.

Joggers ruled the streets early on, before it was the elderly and then children’s turn - all under orders to stay two metres apart under continued social distancing guidelines.

“We can breathe,” exulted one elderly resident of Madrid, Maria Jesus, enjoying a walk in the city centre.

“At home, all you can do is open a window, and you open them every day, but it is not the same as being outdoors.”

Spain records lowest rate of coronavirus contagion since declaration of state of alarm

4/28/2020

The number of daily coronavirus deaths registered in Spain was 301 on Tuesday, according to the latest figures provided by the Health Ministry. This is a slight fall from Monday, when the number of overnight fatalities was 331.

In recent weeks, an uptick in the numbers has come to be expected on Tuesdays, given that figures tend to be underreported on weekends due to the lack of personnel. But this was not the case today.

What’s more, there was also a fall in the number of new infections. On Tuesday, there were 1,308 new infections, compared to yesterday’s figure of 1,831, which represents a 0.6% rise of the total. This is the lowest figure recorded, in both absolute and relative terms, since the declaration of the state of alarm on March 14.
