12/30/2020

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it had administered 2,589,125 first doses of COVID-19 vaccines in the country as of Wednesday morning and distributed 12,409,050 doses.

The tally of vaccine doses distributed and the number of people who received the first dose are for both Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech, vaccines as of 9:00 a.m. ET on Wednesday, the agency said.

According to the tally posted on Dec. 28, the agency had administered 2,127,143 first doses of the vaccines and distributed 11,445,175 doses.

The agency also reported 19,432,125 cases of new coronavirus, an increase of 199,282 from its previous count, and said the number of deaths had risen by 3,390 to 337,419.

New coronavirus variant does not cause illness more severe than others -Public Health England study

12/30/2020

A new variant of the novel coronavirus does not appear to cause more severe illness than other variants, according to a matched study bit.ly/2X7cLgp by Public Health England.

Scientists say the new variant can spread more rapidly. It was found in England in mid December and led to other countries imposing travel restrictions to the United Kingdom. Several other countries have reported variants.

Under the study, researchers compared 1,769 people infected with the new variant with 1,769 who had what they described as “wild-type” virus. The two groups were matched 1:1 on the basis of age, sex, area of residence and time of testing.

Of the 42 people who were admitted to hospital, 16 were infected with the new variant while 26 cases had wild type infection, according to the study. In terms of fatality, there were 12 deaths in variant cases compared to 10 deaths in wild-type cases.

“Preliminary results from the cohort study found no statistically significant difference in hospitalisation and 28-day case fatality between cases with the variant and wild-type comparator cases,” the study said.

There was no significant difference in the likelihood of reinfection with the new variant as compared with the other variants, it said.

U.K. now has enough vaccine ‘to cover the entire population’ after AstraZeneca–Oxford COVID-19 vaccine approved

12/30/2020

The U.K. now has enough vaccine to cover the entire population after the AstraZeneca–Oxford COVID-19 vaccine was approved for use, said health secretary Matt Hancock in an interview on Wednesday.

The vaccine developed by pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford has been approved in the U.K., paving the way for widespread vaccinations with a homegrown shot that is cheaper and easier to transport and store than other vaccines.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, the U.K. drug regulator, authorized the AstraZeneca–Oxford University vaccine for emergency use on Wednesday. It said in a statement: “The Government has today accepted the recommendation from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to authorize Oxford University/AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine for use. ”

Hancock said in an interview with the BBC’s “Breakfast” show: “We’ve got enough of this vaccine on order to vaccinate the whole population — 100 million doses. Add that to the 30 million doses of Pfizer and that’s enough for two doses for the entire population.”

Argentine regulator approves AstraZeneca/Oxford COVID-19 vaccine

12/30/2020

Argentina’s regulator on Wednesday approved the COVID-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University for emergency use, AstraZeneca said in a statement.

AstraZeneca said the approval by the National Administrator for Food and Medical Technology (ANMAT) made Argentina “one of the first countries in the world to authorize” the drug, after the UK regulator gave the green light for its widespread roll-out earlier on Wednesday.

The company said the approval was for the vaccine to be administered to people over the age of 18 in two doses between four and 12 weeks apart, as per the UK approval.

Argentina has a contract to buy 22.4 million doses of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine, which the company said would all be delivered in 2021. Argentina’s President Alberto Fernandez said in August that Argentina and Mexico would also work together to produce the AstraZeneca vaccine for most of Latin America.

Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine approved for use in UK

12/30/2020

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has been approved for use in the UK, with the first doses due to be given on Monday amid rising coronavirus cases.

The UK has ordered 100 million doses - enough to vaccinate 50 million people.

This will cover the entire population, when combined with the full order of the Pfizer-BioNTech jab, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said.

It comes as millions more people in England are expected to be placed under the toughest tier four restrictions.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the development "a triumph" for British science, adding: "We will now move to vaccinate as many people as quickly as possible."

And England's chief medical officer Chris Whitty praised the "considerable collective effort that has brought us to this point".

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Mr Hancock said the development was a "significant moment" in the fight against the virus.

It is the second jab to be approved in the UK after the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was given the go-ahead in December.

More than 600,000 people in the UK have been vaccinated since Margaret Keenan became the first in the world to be given it outside of a clinical trial.

Unlike the Pfizer-BioNTech jab, which needs ultra cold storage at -70C, the Oxford-AstraZeneca can be stored in a standard fridge so will be easier to deliver to care homes and GP surgeries.

Regulator approves plan to stretch supplies of UK Pfizer vaccine

12/29/2020

NHS staff delivering coronavirus vaccinations to thousands of vulnerable patients have been told they can get an extra dose out of the vials to help stretch supplies even further.

Regulators have approved a plan to try and help make sure as many at risk patients as possible can get the vaccine in the coming weeks.

NHS England’s chief executive Sir Simon Stevens has said he hoped all vulnerable people would be offered a vaccine by late spring. He did not set a specific timetable but a recent study suggests the UK needs to be vaccinating as many as 2 million people a week.

There has been widespread speculation that the Oxford University AstraZenca vaccine will be approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) this week.

GPs were told they could stretch the doses to six in a webinar by senior NHS England staff earlier in December but now the MHRA has approved the use.

Until more vaccine is available, official guidance from the Department of Health and Social Care to NHS staff and GPs, which was published on Christmas Eve, said a sixth dose could be possible from the small vials which contain the Pfizer vaccine.

Margaret Keenan, first patient to get Pfizer vaccine, receives second jab

12/29/2020

Margaret Keenan, who became the world's first patient to receive the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine outside a clinical trial, has received her second jab.

The 91-year-old grandmother was given the booster injection at Coventry's University Hospital on Tuesday, three weeks after making history with the first one on 8 December.

Some 616,933 people in the UK had the coronavirus jab between that day and 20 December, according to the most recent Department of Health figures published last week.

But Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Christmas Eve that almost 800,000 people had been given their first dose of the two-stage vaccine.

The initial jabs were given in hospitals, but the rollout has since widened to GP-led sites and care homes.

Will COVID-19 vaccines work on the new coronavirus variant?

12/29/2020

Experts believe so, but they're working to confirm that.

A coronavirus variant in the United Kingdom has caused alarm because of the possibility that it might spread more easily. But even if that turns out to be true, experts say the COVID-19 vaccines being rolled out will likely still work on the variant.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious disease expert, said data coming from Britain indicates the vaccines still will block the virus. But the U.S. also will do tests to be sure.

Viruses often undergo small changes as they reproduce and move through a population. In fact, the slight modifications are how scientists track the spread of a virus from one place to another.

But if a virus mutates significantly enough, one worry is that current vaccines might no longer offer as much protection. And although that's a possibility to watch for over time with the coronavirus, experts say they don't believe it will be the case with the variant in the U.K.

"My expectation is, this will not be a problem," said Moncef Slaoui, the chief science adviser for the U.S. government's COVID-19 vaccine push.

Nearly 2 million Americans have received COVID-19 vaccine

12/28/2020

As vaccinations continue this week, nearly 2 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered across the country within the past two weeks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

U.S. officials said their goal was to vaccinate 20 million people by the end of December, though health experts believe that timeline could fall short since the new year is just days away.

“There’s no doubt about it that things are going a little bit more slowly than we want. I think we really need to ramp up the vaccinations. Get the vaccines out to states but also get the vaccines from the states into people’s arms,” Dr. Ashish Jha with Brown University’s School of Public Health said.

The Trump administration, through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Defense, announced last week the purchase of 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer.
