Arizona reports no new coronavirus deaths, 174 additional cases

8/31/2020

Arizona health authorities reported no new coronavirus deaths and 174 additional cases on Monday morning.

That put the state’s documented totals at 201,835 COVID-19 infections and 5,029 fatalities, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services.

Arizona’s death total actually dropped by 1, which the state health department attributed to a duplicate record.

Multiple key metrics about the severity of Arizona’s pandemic are at or near the lowest they’ve been in a month or more, including coronavirus-related hospitalizations.

The rolling seven-day average for newly reported cases declined Sunday to 508.29, the second-lowest seen since June 1, according to tracking by The Associated Press.

Iceland - For The First Time In 3 Weeks, No New Cases Of Coronavirus Yesterday

8/31/2020

No new cases of the coronavirus were recorded within Iceland yesterday, marking the first time in three weeks that this has happened, RÚV reports. Furthermore, the one hospitalisation reported has been completed; there is no longer anyone being hospitalised for the virus.

There are, however, 100 people in isolation—that is, 100 people with a confirmed case of the coronavirus who are being isolated—and 900 people in quarantine, meaning those who may have the virus but without testing confirmation one way or the other.

As can be seen in the graphs below, a distinct downward trend has been continuing over the past couple of weeks, but it is as yet too soon to say whether the curve will be flattened further.

No sign of any increase in hospital admissions too.

It's so important to look at the whole picture, not just reported cases.

COVID-19 cases in Australia's hotspot fall to seven-week low

8/31/2020

The state at the epicentre of Australia’s second-wave of COVID-19 infections said on Monday the number of new cases fell to a near two-month low, allowing authorities to detail in a week’s time how stringent lockdown measures will be lifted.

Victoria said it has detected 73 new COVID-19 infections in the past 24 hours, the lowest since July 3.

The easing number of COVID-19 cases comes as the state capital Melbourne begins its fourth week of a six-week lockdown that sees residents confined to their homes, a nightly curfew imposed and large parts of the state economy ordered to close.

The total lockdown is set to end on Sep 13, and with cases falling, state Premier Daniel Andrews said his government will on Sunday detail how restrictions will be slowly eased.

China reports 17 new Covid-19 cases but no local cases for 15 straight days

8/31/2020

China reported 17 new Covid-19 (coronavirus) cases on Aug 30, up from 9 reported a day earlier, the country's health authority said on Monday.

The National Health Commission said all of the new cases were imported infections involving travellers returning from abroad, marking the 15th straight day of no local infections for the country.

The number of asymptoma Covid-19 infections now stands at 85,048, while the death toll remained unchanged at 4,634.

No new suspected cases or deaths related to the disease were reported on Sunday, the health commission said.

Of the imported cases, six were reported in Shanghai, five in Tianjin, two in Fujian and one each in Shanxi, Zhejiang, Guangdong and Shaanxi, the commission said.

On Sunday, a total of 24 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery, the commission said.

Australian greenhouse gas emissions fall to lowest level since 1998 under Covid restrictions

8/31/2020

Coronavirus restrictions have caused Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions to fall to their lowest level since 1998, the latest official data suggests.

National emissions in the June quarter 2020 were estimated to be 8% – or about 10m tonnes of carbon dioxide – lower than a year earlier.

The energy and emissions reduction minister, Angus Taylor, said the reductions in preliminary data to June had been caused by “unsustainable restrictions on Australians’ livelihoods and freedom to travel”, including a 79% reduction in emissions caused by jet fuel.

Emissions from petrol were also down 26% in June, compared to the previous year.

“With the impacts of Covid-19 restrictions being felt across the economy, emissions have reduced as expected,” Taylor said.

The figures, released by the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources, give preliminary results to the end of June and official data to March.

Exercise May Boost Your Vaccine Response

8/30/2020

If you are an athlete, you may gain greater immunity from a flu shot than people who are less active, according to two complementary and timely new studies of exercise and vaccinations. The two studies, which involved the same group of elite runners, swimmers, wrestlers, cyclists and other athletes, suggest that intense training amplifies our vaccine response, a finding with particular relevance now, as the flu season looms and scientists work to develop a Covid-19 vaccine.

Having an immune system primed to clobber infections and respond robustly to vaccinations is obviously desirable now, during the ongoing pandemic. And in general, exercise aids immunity, most science shows. People who work out often and moderately tend to catch fewer colds and other viruses than sedentary people. More immediately, if you exercise your arm in the hours before a flu shot, you likely will develop a stronger antibody response than if you rest that arm, a few small studies indicate.

But there have also been suggestions that under certain circumstances, exercise may dampen the immune response. Some epidemiological research and personal stories from athletes hint that intense, exhausting exercise might be detrimental to immunity in the short term. Marathon racers, for example, report catching colds at disproportionately high rates soon after a race, although some physiologists suspect these post-race respiratory problems are inflammatory, not infectious.

Of course, these studies focused on elite, competitive athletes, which most of us are not. But Dr. Sester believes even more-casual recreational athletes are likely to mount better flu-vaccine responses than sedentary people. Likewise, she and her colleagues expect high fitness should improve immune responses to other vaccines, including, potentially, a Covid-19 shot.

“The basic principles of vaccine response are probably the same,” she says. Future studies will have to confirm that possibility, though, if and when a vaccine becomes available.

Mutated (but milder) Coronavirus Strain Found In Indonesia As Cases Jump

8/30/2020

A more infectious mutation of the new coronavirus has been found in Indonesia, the Jakarta-based Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology said on Sunday, as the Southeast Asian country's caseload surges.

Indonesia reported 2,858 new infections on Sunday, data by the health ministry showed, below the previous day's record 3,308 but above the past month's daily average. Its total number of cases was 172,053, with 7,343 COVID-19 fatalities.

The "infectious but milder" D614G mutation of the virus has been found in genome sequencing data from samples collected by the institute, deputy director Herawati Sudoyo told Reuters, adding that more study is required to determine whether that was behind the recent rise in cases.

The strain, which the World Health Organization said was identified in February and has been circulating in Europe and the Americas, has also been found in neighbouring Singapore and Malaysia.

‘Possible’ Oxford vaccine data will be put before regulators this year

8/30/2020

Trials of the Oxford coronavirus vaccine may have gathered enough data to show whether it works and is safe by the end of the year – but it will then need to go through the regulatory process, scientists say.

Prof Andrew Pollard, the director of the Oxford Vaccine Group, said it is “just possible” that there may be enough clinical trial data on Oxford University’s Covid-19 vaccine to put before the regulators this year.

Prof Chris Whitty, England’s chief medical officer, has said a vaccine may not be ready until next winter. Pollard suggested they were hoping to go faster.

“I think that Chris Whitty is quite rightly being cautious, that it could take as long as that to first of all demonstrate a vaccine works and is safe and then to go through the processes of regulators looking at that very carefully to make sure everything’s been done correctly,” Pollard told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“But it is also just possible that, if the cases accrue rapidly in the clinical trials, that we could have that data to put before regulators this year, and then there would be a process that they go through in order to make a full assessment of the data.”
