Britain has officially passed the peak of its coronavirus outbreak, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Thursday.

'She has superhuman DNA:' 101-year-old woman beats COVID-19, has survived 2 pandemics and cancer

4/30/2020

In the midst of the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918, Angelina Friedman was born on a passenger ship taking immigrants from Italy to New York City.

Now, nearly 102 years later, she has survived a second pandemic.

Friedman, a resident of the North Westchester Restorative Therapy and Nursing Center, was taken to the hospital on March 21 for a minor medical procedure.

When she tested positive for COVID-19, the procedure was postponed, and Friedman spent a week in the hospital. She returned to the nursing home and was isolated in her room.

"My mother is a survivor," Joanne Merola said by phone. "She survived miscarriages, internal bleeding and cancer."

Because her mother is nearly deaf, they can't speak on the phone.

Merola marvels at her mother's endurance.

"She is not human," Merola said. "She has superhuman DNA."

"If my mother could see this, I'd say, 'Keep going, Ma. You're going to outlive us all,'" Merola said.

Oxford University is partnering with a vaccine manufacturer, trial results expected in June

4/30/2020

The first results from human trials of a coronavirus vaccine being developed by Oxford University should be available by mid-June, said Oxford professor John Bell.

"This is still a development program. We need still to demonstrate that this vaccine works in human populations," he told BBC Radio. "But the team ... have vaccinated several hundred people now and we hope to get some signal about whether it's working by the middle of June."

The Oxford University research team is partnering with UK-based global biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to develop and manufacture this vaccine on a large scale.

"Once we get an approval by the regulators, we don't want to have to go back to the beginning and work out how we manufacture it at scale. And we also want to make sure that the rest of the world will be ready to make this vaccine at scale," Bell said.

According to the university, AstraZeneca will work with global partners on the international distribution of the vaccine, particularly working to make it available and accessible for low- and medium-income countries.

Ford produces 10 million face shields for health care workers

4/30/2020

Ford Motor Co. announced Thursday that they have produced 10 million face shields for health care workers amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Ford workers have been volunteering to produce face shields since March 23 as frontline workers face shortages of protective equipment.

Officials say the company has shipped face shields to medical workers in all 50 states as of Thursday. Just a few weeks ago, Ford shipped one million shields to New York City -- the state hit hardest by COVID-19 in the U.S.

More than 350 UAW workers are producing the shields at a rate of 1 for every 10 seconds, officials said.

South Korean experts have concluded that the patients who were feared to have been 'reinfected' with the virus were just false positives

4/30/2020

South Korea has reported no new domestic coronavirus cases for the first time since February, the Korea Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said.

The KCDC reported four new infections, all imported cases, taking the national tally to 10,765. The death toll rose by one to 247, while 9,059 have been discharged.

Of the total, 1,065 were imported cases, where more than 90% were Koreans, according to a KCDC statement.

A clinical expert panel on Wednesday also concluded that recovered coronavirus patients who later test positive for the virus again were not “reactivated” or reinfected, but were false positives.

The head of the committee said the false positives were due to technical limits of PCR testing. The country has so far reported 292 such cases.

Colonel Tom Moore fundraiser for NHS hits £30m on his 100th birthday

4/30/2020

Captain Tom Moore has raised more than £30m in donations for NHS Charities Together by taking part in a “100th birthday walk”.

Earlier this month, Captain Moore launched a fundraiser for the NHS that involved walking 100 laps of his garden to mark his milestone birthday.

The veteran, who served in India and Burma during the Second World War, initially set a target of raising £1,000 on his JustGiving page, which would be donated to help support NHS workers during the coronavirus outbreak.

Just a few weeks on, the centenarian has garnered donations from more than one million people, received messages of support from well-known figures including members of the royal family and raised more than £30m in total, a target that he hit on his 100th birthday on Thursday 30 April.

Switzerland says young children can hug grandparents

4/30/2020

Swiss authorities say it is now safe for children under the age of 10 to hug their grandparents, in a revision to official advice on coronavirus.

The health ministry's infectious diseases chief Daniel Koch said scientists had concluded that young children did not transmit the virus.

However, he said such meetings should be brief and not involve babysitting.

Switzerland is one of several European countries beginning to ease their lockdown measures.

This week, garden centres and hairdressers have been allowed to open their doors. Schools and shops selling items other than food will be allowed to reopen in two weeks' time.

Dr Koch told a news conference this week that the original advice to keep distance between children and their grandparents was made when less was known about how the coronavirus was transmitted.
